Once again, Tyler has place together a ample movie; I went to the first showing of it here in town and the theater was PACKED; not many seats left; yet, it was a gargantuan movie; Cicely and Maya giving us lessons; Maya with the wedding poem; The wedding itself;(nothing short of resplendent) ; the daughters, the men, Joe, Madea; mountainous combination; Like I mentioned on Tyler’s station when I commented on the movie; some movies invent you believe, some leave you with a short feeling, some honest leave a lasting impression and perform you empowered; this movie did that and more! I higly support those to glance this movie and be empowered to do fantastic things;

Full Review:

Caution–This plan reveals major details about the movie’s station.

I first saw this film in the theater in March. I was in the market for a quality demonstrate to celebrate Women’s History Month and the tail kill of “365 Days of African American History.” But it was Friday night and I was also in the mood to laugh. So I convinced my date to explore “Madea’s Family Reunion” rather than the action flick he was lobbying for. We’d both seen the stage version of “Madea’s Family Reunion” and all of Tyler Perry’s other shows on DVD and knew the film would be fun. But we didn’t anticipate the degree to which Mr. Perry and his pistol packin’ alter ego, grandma Mabel “Madea” Simmons (one of three characters he plays in the film), would load so many dead-serious and inspirational messages into this scenic gem.

The ethnically diverse audience at the cinema where we saw the film seemed to concur. We all gasped and guffawed, oohed and aahed at the appropriate moments (except one, which I’ll address later), and stayed to gaze the outtakes and extra treats rolled alongside the credits. Mr. Perry knows his audience…he kept us enraptured, in the palm of his hand, until Madea broke the spell and directed, “You can go home now.”

The film’s script, music (which writer, producer, actor, director Perry had a hand in), cinematography, casting and wardrobe elated the senses, with one major exception that profoundly disappointed me. Not everyone seemed to agree; I was surprised (and red faced) to be the only one in the theater to react audibly to the rendering of the “Springtime in Paris” wedding theme pulled together by wedding planner Milay Jenay Lori (played by Jenifer Davis) . When I saw it, I couldn’t back but blurt out, “That’s poor!” Everyone else in the theater was soundless. They were probably either wishing I’d pipe down or wondering, as I was, why–given the movie’s gargantuan budget, the beauty of some scenes and realistic homeliness of others–the bridal area had to be so goldarn tacky. But that’s a minor matter, like a ding in the fender of a top-of-the-line sports car, or the fact that fine-as-wine and manly-but-artistic Frankie (played by Boris Kodjoe) was not as wealthy as the equally resplendent, “admire you to death,” Carlos (played by Blair Underwood) .

“Madea’s Family Reunion” is not unbiased a gem. This blockbuster’s also a cash cow. According to Wikipedia, “On opening weekend, February 24, 2006 Mr. Perry’s movie version of Madea’s Family Reunion opened at number one with $30 million, more than triple the amount it cost to perform.” Furthermore, as IMDb reports, “After the first week record-breaking release of the first “Madea” film by Perry, Tyler, Lions Gate Home Entertainment acquired a seven-picture deal of the remaining Madea films.” In addition to his commercial and indispensable success, Mr. Perry’s website reports that he is currently celebrating being the first playwright of this genre to be sponsored by a major pharmaceutical company, Glaxo Wellcome.

I’m thrilled at Mr. Perry’s success. Like single-mother Whoopi and motherless-at-an-early-age Madonna, the N’Awlins native and adult survivor of child abuse has joined the ranks of wildly well-liked self-made millionaires who have overcome large personal tribulations, taken uncommon jobs to finance their dreams, and even spent time homeless. Mr. Perry began writing stage plays at age 18, and so far has conquered stage and conceal. Next on the horizon: his first new, Don’t Originate a Gloomy Woman Engage Her Earrings Off: Madea’s Commentaries on Worship and Life. I can’t wait to secure between those sheets!

Invader blood marches through my veins like giant, radioactive rubber pants! Met Zim, an arrogant and none-too-bright Irkin sent to Earth to end it. Well, sent by accident. The Sizable Ones impartial wanted to glean rid of Zim and shot him randomly into place.

While other Irkin Invaders are equipped with SIR’s (Standard Information Retrieval Units), Zim is given an assistant attach together from pieces pulled from the trash; a GIR. (“What does the `G’ stand for? ” GIR shrugs, “I don’t know.”) Ah, the stink of tidy!

With GIR’s aid, Zim must conquer earth. He disguises himself as a human child and attends school. No one suspects him except Dib, an outcast at school with a fixation on alien invasions.

The humor is advanced for Nickelodeon, most likely the reason they finally pulled the expose. Body functions and toilet humor abound, along with some ample one-liners. Pure cartoon entertainment, especially for fans of Jhonen Vasquez’s humor.

My one complaint would be that there are no English subtitles. For those of us who are a limited hard of hearing, I like to have subtitles sometimes.

Here’s a rundown of the episodes:

Disc One:

Episode One-The Nightmare Begins

On Irkin, Zim shows up tedious for Invader assignments and is sent away in a random direction with GIR, unprejudiced to glean rid of him. Zim lands on earth, and sets up his sinful for plotting to kill the planet.

Episode Two-Bestest Friend

Zim discovers he won’t fit in with earthlings unless he has a friend. So he tests several of the kids to score out who will be his bestest friend. The tests include absorbency, electrical conductivity, and one that eager a squirrel and a taxi, but wasn’t shown. The winner is Keef!

Episode Three-NanoZim

Dib takes an incriminating relate of Zim to send to Mysterious Mysteries of Unique Mystery, to indicate Zim is an alien. Zim shrinks down and goes inside Dib’s body to demolish his memory of the photo. Dib uses his dad’s nano-technology to prance after Zim, but Gaz has to assume over the controls to defeat Zim.

Episode Four-Parent Teacher Night

Zim has to reprogram his mechanical parents to help Parent/Teacher night at school, but instead of the training program, GIR changes the conceal to his common programs (like the Scary Monkey Note) . Zim winds out with really outlandish parents.

Episode Five-Walk of Doom

Zim gets lost on purpose to test his recent geographic locator, but GIR removed it to manufacture room for a cupcake.

Episode Six-Germs

Hilarious episode! Zim buys germ goggles, only to net out his house is riddled with contemptible germs. Especially GIR. The only thing Zim can rep that is germ free is some really scandalous burger meat, so he wears the meat

Episode Seven-Dark Harvest

One of my favorites! Zim needs human organs in order to appear human to the school nurse. He steals organs and replaces them with items like hall passes, cartons of milk, and cans of soda. At the extinguish, he is bloated with organs.

Episode Eight-Attack of the Saucer Morons

Zim declares war on bees. He crashes his ship in the park during a UFO convention. “Slip the pig, GIR, slide the pig!”

Episode Nine-The Wettening

When it rains, Zim discovers that water hurts him. Unfortunately, so does Dib. What follows is the world’s ultimate water balloon fight.

Disc Two:

Episode Ten-Career Day

This is likely the most disgusting, and therefore one of the funnier, episodes. Zim wants to be Lord of All Humans on career day, but is instead assigned to food preparation. He gets a case of zits and…well…things go downhill from there.

Episode Eleven-Battle Dib

Dib has to go through a triathlon type contest fair to accept his father to label a tag. The contest includes Spido-Ractno-Rama.

Episode Twelve-Planet Jackers

Zim’s telescope is broken, so he must gather a more remarkable one. GIR wants to create biscuits instead. Using the telescope, Zim finds out earth has been planet-jacked and needs to accept it support from the jackers.

Episode Thirteen-Rise of the Zitboy

Zim gets a pimple, and discovers that it has the power to hypnotize humans. He draws a face on it and names it Pustulio. He refers to it as a ‘hideous montage of humiliation and shame’.

Episode Fourteen-Invasion of the Idiot Dog Brain

When Zim is installing a current house brain, GIR gets in the scheme and GIR’s brain winds out in the house. “Shut your noise tube, taco human!”

Episode Fifteen-Bad Dreadful Rubber Piggy

Zim attempts to send a Hunter/Destroyer machine into the past to pick up rid of Dib, but GIR’s rubber pig goes instead. Zim then must exercise ALL of GIR’s rubber pigs to change the past and finish Dib from hounding him.

Episode Sixteen-A Room With a Moose

Zim sends a bus with Dib and his classroom out into site, through a wormhole headed towards a Room With A Moose. It’s up to Dib to earn the bus help to earth.

Episode Seventeen-Hamstergeddon

One of my favorites! Meet Peepi the hamster. Peepi is the class’s unique pet. Zim alters Peepi to grow at a phenomenal rate in order to consume Peepi’s cuteness to conquer the world.

Invader Zim is an imaginative and toothsome cartoon for those adults, like me, who never tire of being a kid once in awhile. I wouldn’t recommend this cartoon for petite kids, but its expedient comical fun for the conventional cartoon connoisseur. Relish!

Released in 1989, HEATHERS received sharply mixed reviews. The film was well-liked in a few major metro markets, but it proved a box office disappointment overall. Although many regarded it as a failed take-off on such “high school angst” films as THE BREAKFAST CLUB, more than a few critics saw it as a film too powerful ahead of its time and predicted that it would have more of an impact down the road. They were suitable. When the film began to approach the home market it exploded in popularity, and given such later high school horrors as Columbine today the film seems less take-off than downright prophetic.

It is also one of the most wickedly comical movies to hit the cover since Stanley Kubrik’s DR. STRANGELOVE. The sage starts off normally enough: extremely colorful, extremely dazzling Veronica (Winona Ryder) is a high school junior who has fallen in with the high school clique to kill all high school cliques, three young women each named Heather (Kim Walker, Lisanne Falk, and Shannen Doherty.) The Heathers are beautiful, shiny, rich… and intent on shoring up their maintain social positions by crushing every one around them with a degree of vindictiveness that only the teenagers can successfully carry.

When Veronica meets fresh student J.D. Dean (Christian Slater) her interest in the Heathers begins to wane and they turn on her. J.D. has his fill concept to relieve Veronica salvage even. It involves a cup of Liquid Drano–and before Veronica can mediate she finds herself making a execute spy like suicide. The result is, as Veronica puts it, teen-age angst with a body count, and quite suddenly suicide seems the “in thing” at Westerberg High.

If you steal high school fondly, you were probably one of the current kids. For the rest of us, HEATHERS is so upright that it will build you wince in its portrait of unthinking cruelty: the meanness of the up-scale cliques and brainless jocks, the ridiculed gracious kids, the savage assaults on the unpopular ones. it is bitter, bitter stuff.

It is also extremely comical. Grand of this is due to a truly gleaming script by Daniel Waters, who recognizes that teens rarely relate to adults in the same draw that they deliver to each other–and he not only brings forth the casually mature profanity, he essentially creates a truly believable and hilariously droll mode of slang that characterizes the “in crowd.” And Waters’ site is even more disconcerting and outrageously comical as it runs, with unexpected logic, to a truly deadly conclusion.

The performances are knockouts. Ryder has given quite a few memorable performances, but she has never been more worthy than she is here as Veronica, the obedient girl turned unintentional killer; Christian Slater has never topped the performance he gives here as J.D. The “Heathers” are perfectly, flawless cast, as is every one from the weary important to Veronica’s vacuous parents. As for direction, Michael Lehmann moves the film at a expeditiously clip, hitting more high points than you can imagine. Indeed, everything about the film is estimable.

The DVD package is very nice, including an engaging audio commentary, an piquant documentary featuring interviews with director, writer, and major cast members (Kim Walker, who died in 2001, sadly excepted), and a script of the ending as originally planned by writer Waters. I recommend the film as a “must have”–but a word of warning. If you were one of the very well-liked during your high school years, you won’t get it in the least delightful. Yes: that’s really how the rest of us saw you.

GFT, Amazon Reviewer

For a lot of teenagers, popularity takes precedence over high SAT scores or early admission into an Ivy. It’s literally viewed as a matter of life or death, and no film brings that truth to life as vividly as “Heathers.” Winona Ryder is Veronica, who (along with Heather Duke, Heather McNamara, and Heather Chandler) belongs to Westerburg High School’s most elite and coveted clique. These four young women supposedly epitomize the essence of icy, and earning their ticket of approval is as prestigious as getting knighted by Her Majesty. But things bag unsuitable when Veronica violently clashes with one of the Heathers, and shortly thereafter the clique slowly collapses under its hold weight. Of course, there’s powerful more to the film’s region, which is a radiant satire on high school, the firece competition to be accepted and favorite, and the faculty’s inability to connect with their students. Pregnant with one-liners and armed with a Ginsu-sharp script, “Heathers” is a pitch-perfect comedy that’s wickedly laughable. The best performances definitely belong to Ryder and then-unknown Shannen Doherty. Those who rolled their eyes at the “happily-ever-after” sentiment of “Sixteen Candles” have bonded with this film over the years, turing it into a diminutive scale classic. “Heathers” didn’t exactly region the box office on fire upon release in 1989, but it’s definitely grown in popularity since then. Give it a stare, and you’ll stare why.

SE7EN – Can anything more be said about what a big film this is???? Well, now, YES because Unique Line’s unusual Double DVD is a astounding package and a MUST for any fan of the film. The film has once again been remastered from the recent film elements and it has never looked better — even better than the extinct Criterion laserdisc. Colors, shadowings, sound, incompatibility have all been adjusted for optimum carry out (one of the extras on disc 2 shows the before-and-after on several scenes) . Unbiased check out the green lamps in that library scene – WOW! The film is on Disc 1 and there are 4 separate commentary tracks…the most spicy one in my concept is Track 2 which discusses the genesis of the project from script, to selling it to a studio and the fight to sustain the recent ending. Fincher is always captivating, but hearing Andrew Kevin Walker discuss his inspiration for writing the script and the struggles to net it made is even more sharp. The train unhurried one of the most modern screenplays in years is pure genius. “Extras”-filled Disc 2 features deleted scenes (including the new opening) …most of which are unbiased slightly extended scenes from the film (you peep more of “Pride”, etc.) . There is also an alternate lop of the ending with different shots that was test-screened to an audience plus a storyboard of a different ending that was never shot. All of these near with or without commentary. An analysis of the opening credit sequence offers different angles and commentaries on 3 variants of the sequence. There are collected galleries with commentaries by the photographers. Yes, “Sloth” victim’s decay is included in the photos (unfortunately, not as clearly as it was presented on the Criterion LD) as well as John Doe’s notebooks and lair. There is only one theatrical trailer (where are all the tv spots, etc. that were on the LD????? ) and a short EPK. There are also some DVD-rom features on both discs (script-to-scene, etc.) to round it all out.

Only downside is that a lot of the extras on the Criterion LD are NOT INCLUDED HERE in any execute. Although Criterion holds the rights to their unique commentary track (Featuring Fincher, Pitt, Freeman, Engage Bottin, Walker, etc) and some other extras, surely Current LINE owns the rights to the tv spots and other such promo materials. Where, for instance, is the titanic gallery of unique artwork and poster concepts that so playfully venerable the number 7 or the sins as the backdrop???? Unique Line created these so why aren’t they included here? The Criterion disc also had out-takes and many other things not included here, so don’t ever toss that disc out! It’s clear to be notable some day. And with this DVD, which also includes items NOT on the Criterion LD, they combine to construct the ultimate “SE7EN” collection.

“At first sin is a stranger in the soul; then it becomes a guest; and when we are habituated to it, it becomes as if the master of the house.” – Tolstoy.

Although not originating from the bible, the thought of deadly sins is almost as broken-down as Christian doctrine itself. Theologians like 4th century Greek monk Evagrius of Pontus first compiled catalogues of deadly offenses against the divine order, which 6th century pope Gregory the Astronomical consolidated into a list of seven sins, which in turn formed the basis of the works of medieval/renaissance writers like St. Thomas Aquinas (“Summa Theologiae”), Geoffrey Chaucer (“Canterbury Tales”), Christopher Marlowe (“Dr. Faustus”), Edmund Spenser (“The Faerie Queene”) and Dante Alighieri (“Commedia Divina”/”Purgatorio”) . And in times when the ability to read was a privilege rather than a basic skill, the depiction of sin in paintings wasn’t far behind; particularly resulting from the 16th century’s reformulation of church doctrine, the works of artists like Hieronymus Bosch and Pieter Bruegel the Elder brought the horrific results of humankind’s penchant to indulge in vice serve into general consciousness with surrealistic eloquence, reminding their viewers that no sin goes unseen (Bosch, “The Seven Deadly Sins”) and that its commission leads straight into a hell reigned by terrifying, grotesque demons and devils whose sole purpose is to torture those fallen into their hands (Bosch, “The Hay-Wagon” and “The Last Judgment;” Bruegel, “The Triumph of Death” and “The Tower of Babel”) .

More recently, the seven deadly sins have been the subject of Stephen Sondheim’s play “Getting Away With Cancel” and a ballet by George Balanchine (“Seven Deadly Sins”) ; and on the silver camouflage the topic has been addressed almost since the beginning of filmmaking (Cabiria [1914], Intolerance [1916]) . Thus, “Se7en” builds on a solid tradition both in its gain domain and in other art forms, topically as well as in its near, denouncing society’s apathy towards vice and crime. Yet – and although expressly referencing the writings of St. Thomas Aquinas, Chaucer and Dante – David Fincher’s movie eschews well-trodden paths and grabs the viewer’s attention from the beginning; and it does so not merely by the depiction of serial killer John Doe’s (Kevin Spacey’s) crimes, which could easily degenerate into a mindless bloodfest that would defeat the movie’s purpose. (Not that there isn’t a graceful allotment of blood and gore on display; both visually and in the characters’ dialogue regarding those details not actually shown; but Fincher uses the crimes’ plain nature to construct a sense of stark realism, rather than for shock value alone.) In addition, Doe’s mindset is painstakingly presented by the opening credits’ skittish nature, his “lair”’s apocalyptic makeup and his notebooks, all of which were actually written out (at worthy expense), and whose compilation is shown underlying the credits. The movie’s atmosphere of unrelenting doom is further underscored by a color design dominated by brown, gray and only subdued hues of other colors, and by the fact that almost every outdoors scene is space in rain. Moreover, although screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker explains on the DVD that the account was inspired by his observations in Unusual York (and the movie was shot partly there, partly in L.A.), it is site in a faceless, nameless city, thus emphasizing that its effort isn’t a specific site but society generally.

Central to the movie is the incompatibility between world-weary Detective Somerset (Morgan Freeman) who, while decrying the rampant occurrence of violence in society, for noteworthy of the movie seems to have resigned himself to his inability to do something meaningful about this (and therefore seems to regain apathy for himself, too, until his reluctant final turnaround), and younger Detective Mills (Brad Pitt), who fought for a reassignment to this particular situation, perhaps naively expecting his contributions to actually produce a difference; only to become a pawn in Doe’s intention instead and thus demonstrate that, given the accurate trigger, nobody is beyond temptation. As such, Somerset and Mills are not merely another incarnation of the famous old-cop-young-cop pairing. Rather, their characters’ development over the course of the film forces each viewer to put a question to his/her occupy stance towards vice.

Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt perfectly represent the two detectives; while Freeman imbues his Will Somerset with a unruffled dignity, professionalism and learning, muted by profound but not yet wholly irreversible resignation, Pitt’s David Mills is a brash everyman from the suburbs with an undeniable breeze of prejudice, a penchant for expeditiously judgment and a thorough lack of sophistication, both personally and culturally. Distinguished are also the appearances of Gwyneth Paltrow (significantly Brad Pitt’s real-life girlfriend at the time) as Mills’s wife Tracy and ex-marine R. Lee Ermey as the police captain. Yet, from his very first appearance onwards, this is entirely Kevin Spacey’s film. Reportedly, Brad Pitt especially fought hard for his casting; and it is indeed hard to imagine “Se7en” with anybody other than the guy who, that same year, also won an Oscar for portraying devilish Keyser Soze in “The Usual Suspects”: No living actor has Spacey’s ability to simultaneously impart spine-chilling villainy, laconic indifference and limitless superiority with merely a few gestures and vocal inflections.

While “Se7en” can certainly claim the “sledgehammer” carry out on its viewers sought by its fictional killer, the punishment meted out to Doe’s victims – taking their perceived sins to the indecent – pales in comparison to that awaiting sinners according to medieval teachings. (Inter alia, gluttons would thus be forced to eat vermin, toads and snakes, greed-mongers effect in cauldrons of boiling oil and those guilty of lust smothered in fire and brimstone.) Most serial killers have decidedly more mundane motivations than Doe. And after all, this is only a movie.

Right?

“Sin … engenders vice by repetition of the same acts, [clouding the conscience and corrupting the judgment.] Thus sin tends to reproduce … and reinforce itself, but it cannot demolish the right sense at its root.” – Catechism of the Catholic Church (1994) .

Who’s up for a truly creepy unnerved house thriller? In 1976, director Dan Curtis, Shadowy Shadows (1966) and Trilogy of Scare (1975) brought to life a wonderfully scary movie that scarred quite a few younger viewers at the time and unexcited has the power to evoke strong remembrances when mentioned.

Burnt Offerings (1976) stars Karen Unlit, Oliver Reed, Bette Davis, and Burgess Meredith. City dwellers Marian (Dim) and Ben (Reed) Rolf gain the deal of a lifetime in a improbable, secluded country estate, and soon choose in, along with their son and obsolete auntie (Davis) . A deal too gracious to be apt? Why yes, it is, as outlandish things commence happening, but not so queer as to send up serious warning flags that would cause most any of us to cruise.

What was so vast about this movie was the scheme the director took his time in ratcheting up the suspense for the viewer. Changes to the various characters were introduced in such as device as to seem subtle, and not highly alarming. Soon some of the characters do obtain on, but by then, it’s too tedious. I opinion Reed was really mountainous in this movie, a man jumpy by a past demon amplified through the house, who manages to sustain a fairly level head throughout. Another astonishing character in the movie is the house itself. Dunsmuir Estate is the setting for most of the movie, actually coming to life through skillful directing and some very creepy music. This is an steady home, located in Oakland, California.

The movie runs fair under two hours, but the time will seem to go by rapid as you will collect yourself gorilla glued to the cover, waiting in anticipation as to what happens next. There is a noticeable lack of blood, as the scares are more of the psychological kind. This seems to be a tactic dilapidated not so grand these days, as visceral sells, but I do devour when the violence can be implied, rather than shown. I net my imagination is able to reach up with plenty of scary images given the fair fuel. The main plight I had with the movie was the narrate. The movie on the disc appears in that sort of diffused style favorite in the 70’s, where everything seems to have a miniature fuzz on it, a haze throughout the relate. I did salvage extinct to it after awhile, but it was a diminutive annoying. I don’t seem to occupy it being like this when I first saw the movie so long ago, but oh well. Another predicament, a minor one, was some of the audio was unclear, as it seemed the audio levels were uneven at times. There are English subtitles, and I made exhaust of them.

As far as special features go, there is a commentary track by director Curtis, Karen Unlit and Co-writer William F. Nolan and an modern theatrical trailer which I would avoid watching until after watching the film as it gave too great away, in my thought. I will mammoth you this, the waste truly a climatic one, and well worth the wait. If you liked Burnt Offerings, I would highly recommend the 1963 Robert Wise film, The Haunting.

Directed by Dan Curtis (TV’s Black Shadows), BURNT OFFERINGS tells the memoir of the Rolf family who, one summer, rent a mountainous house to come by away from it all. The home is owned by the Alerdyce (sp) family, an eccentric bunch including Burgess Meredith. The Rolf family is jubilant, despite having to do astounding amounts of yard work (some vacation) and taking care of the elderly matriarch of the Alerdyce family who lives in the attic and whom no one ever sees. No one except Mrs. Rolf played by Karen Dark.

The house begins to repair itself and other unusual things initiate to happen. Sanity if questioned, bonds are broken, trust is shattered, and soon death arrives in the design of a ghostly hearse and it’s pale driver…possibly one of the creepiest characters ever to grace your television cloak.

I am not certain if this movie was made for television, but that’s where I first saw it. Later when I saw it on video, it appeared to be the proper version I saw.

I cannot credit the cast of this movie enough. All were expedient, even the young boy. Bette Davis and Oliver Reed do grand work, but the standout has to be Karen Sunless. Fade over Weep Queens, Karen Unlit can outshine anyone when it comes to pushing creepy glances and facial expressions. Her last scene in the film haunts me to this day. Oh man, I can unexcited leer her!

The title refers to the practice in some cultures of burning animals alive as sacrifices to the Gods. They don’t realize it, but the Rolf family is being led to the altar, the fire is hot, and you are invited along. I wait on anyone who has not seen this film to not miss this opportunity to believe it!

The 2-Disc Puny Edition was purchased impulsively on its street date release, after I saw it staring at me on a shelf at a local retailer. Having greatly enjoyed Rabid, The Brood, Videodrome, and Wreck, I had long been moving to view Stereo and Crimes of the Future. Yet having picked it up for Cronenberg’s two early features, I was watching Swiftly Company for the sixth time on Saturday night of that same week.

Phil Adamson (John Saxon) : You know you’re out of your goddamn mind, Johnson. You’re out of your mind, and you’re over-the-hill. First you turn my trailer into a goddamn whorehouse, now it’s an insane asylum!

John Saxon’s villainy as the FastCo oil company accumulate is hilarious. Aside from the wonderfully written dialogue, his facial expressions and gestures are astounding. Lonnie “Lucky Man” Johnson’s (William Smith) team consists of a Western genre family-like trio, with character names such as Billy the Kid, P.J. and Elder; all unbelievable performances. Gary “The Blacksmith” Shadowy (Cedric Smith) is Lonnie’s top competitor. He is neither a one-dimensional friend nor foe. His personal team members, known as Stoner and Meatball, are a amusing pair. Stoner is likable and not-such-a-bad guy, while Meatball is a classic A-hole. Candy (Judy Foster) is Miss FastCo, a not-so-dumb blonde with feelings for Billy, and who makes an admirable stand when her self-respect is threatened by her employer’s demands. William Smith and Claudia Jennings are the long-distance relationship lovers that I, on a personal level, have grown strongly attached to. Both, individually and together, add to the film something magical and nostalgic for me that I salvage very rare in most movies that I’ve seen. The scenes fervent with them makes me feel like a puny boy spending time with a current aunt and uncle. Mind you, I near from a Hispanic middle class background.

The cinematographer is largely to thank for capturing the humor of the film, as well as the documentary-like and captivating treatment of the dragsters; not to mention a multitude of highly admirable shots. Also worth mentioning is the work of Art Director Carol Spier, as well as the choices of music that significantly add to this extraordinary itsy-bitsy film. I have to say that Quickly Company has been one of the most delicious surprises that I have encountered on DVD so far this year, along with The Passion of Joan of Arc, Flesh + Blood, Humanité, and Diary of a Country Priest.

Now, about Stereo and Crimes of the Future – after my prefer, I got home as quickly as I could, and saw them first. Alas, they did not fully appeal to me, though Cronenberg’s pleasing advance to the storytelling on both, and his very nice camera work, did. I am very contented to have finally seen them, and I do intend to redo so again in the immediate future.

Blue Underground along with the personal supervision of Cinematographer Imprint Irwin expose an unbelievable print for a late-Seventies B-movie. The colors and sharpness are outstanding; and the sound is extremely satisfying. David Cronenberg’s commentary is both attractive and very attractive. His contain enthusiasm on the film, and at the discovery of the restoration of a thought-to-be lost seen is fabulous. Comments like: “…it’s very great me. And I don’t contemplate anybody else could have made this movie the plan … that I did.” He stumbles at this last comment, probably concerned with sounding egotistical. However, with his style being so obvious along with his input into the script, he has justification to effect that statement. Cronenberg also remarks on the commentary: “Worth every penny of it, wasn’t it? ” I quite agree. And am very ecstatic to hear a director blissful with his have work, for a change. This film should appeal to fans of Seventies exploitation and car racing, while bitter and stubborn Cronenberg no-nonsense fear fans might need some lubing, or repeated viewings, to be pleased it for what it is and not for what they want it or ask it to be.

Billy “The Kid” Brooker (Nicholas Campbell) : You know something, gang? There’s a lot of junk you can set down your pipes, you know what I mean. Now I’m talking about the noble stuff. You gotta choose care of your baby’s engine. So I suggest you go like the pros, and go with FastCo. If you want that power, that performance, and that protection. Yeah. FastCo. This is what all the pro racers exercise. FastCo Motor Treatment. (Chuckles) . All accurate.

Stereo and Crimes of the Future are among the best underground films produced in North America in the tedious 60’s/early 70’s, a time when Kenneth Infuriate and Martin Scorsese were also making their first films. Thanks to Blue Underground for releasing those two famous productions (along with the immense Quick Company in a improbable transfer) in such a classy edition.

The tragedy of Jacqueline du Pré is well-known: a career cleave short by multiple sclerosis at 28, death from the disease at 42. In the early years it seemed she would go on forever and have one of the greatest careers ever allowed a cellist. She DID have a large career, but it lasted a mere ten years. This DVD is a compilation of various filmed footage from that career. First, there is a long documentary, peppered with musical excerpts, about her life. This is then followed by a elephantine performance of the concerto with which she was most associated, the Elgar. She is accompanied by her then-new husband, Daniel Barenboim, conducting the Unique Philharmonia Orchestra (as it was then called) . The date of the performance does not seem to be anywhere in the associated booklet, but I contemplate it to be about 1968 or 1969. The performance, of course, is stupendous, as anyone who knows her legendary audio recording (with Sir John Barbirolli conducting the London Symphony Orchestra) will already know. She owned this concerto. She and Barenboim communicate almost by telepathy and one can ogle them shooting smiles attend and forth at each other throughout the performance. One also sees glimpses of her parents in the audience, beaming.

The second performance is even more outstanding. It is du Pré, Pinchas Zukerman and Barenboim playing Beethoven’s Piano Trio No. 5, the ‘Ghost.’ Filmed in St. John’s, Smith Square, it is simply stupendous. The three instrumentalists are in complete emotional and musical sync. The second movement in particular is emotionally satisfying. One can gaze and hear split-second alterations in tempi and phrasing being communicated with itsy-bitsy glances amongst the partners. (And they are so YOUNG!)

The documentary about du Pré’s life includes interviews and musical snippets intelligent many of the people who figured in her life. She is shown playing cello duets with her teacher, William Pleeth; playing several pieces accompanied by her pianist mother, Iris du Pré; an excerpt from Bruch’s ‘Kol Nidrei,’ accompanied by Barbirolli and the Hallé Orchestra; playing from the Second Brahms Cello Sonata, with Barenboim at the piano; something from the Saint-Saëns Cello Concerto, with Barenboim conducting the Novel Philharmonia. There is an interview (the only thing here in color) done in 1982, several years after she had had to retire from the concert stage. There are absorbing (and intelligent) introductions to the two complete musical performances by the film maker, Christoper Nupen, who was closely associated with her throughout her career and who not only filmed the musical sections but also effect together the documentary portions of the DVD. Nupen was originally with BBC but left to earn his possess production company, Allegro Films, and apparently this is the first release of a projected Allegro series that will include DVDs featuring Vladimir Ashkenazy, Andrés Segovia, Zukerman, Itzhak Perlman, and many more artists true up to the reveal, e.g. Evgeny Kissin. Something to peer for, this series.

For those of you who knew and loved the work of du Pré, this DVD is a must. For those of you who never knew her, this is a fabulous introduction to a truly titanic musician’s work. And we will eventually regain the Allegro DVD of her playing with the ‘Israeli Mafia’ (Zukerman, Perlman, Barenboim, and the ‘honorary Israeli,’ Zubin Mehta playing bass) in Schubert’s ‘Trout’ Quintet. And more.

Scott Morrison

Here we have one of the most bright DVD available in classical music. A documentary about Jaqueline du Pre’s life and art, joining together some of the most valuable people in her life, like her parents, her first personal teacher, William Pleeth (her mother was really the first one who introduced Jacqueline into the world of music, as she tells in the images), her husband, Daniel Barenboim and a couple of musicians that recall piece in the Jacqueline’s career, that brief voyage through the cello notes in a kind of magical ships, like her art was, a magician that took with her all those who listen her performances of orchestral and chamber music.

The DVD is section of a colossal collection of recorded music and documentaries shot by the very music knower Christopher Nupen, who had worked too with artists son mountainous like Ashkenazy, Barenboim, Kissin… Apart from two Spanish musicians; Segovia and Halffter whom I hope will be soon on DVD like Jacqueline du Pre is now. All the documentaries, and this one too, seems to be done with a big plan of the music by Mr. Nupen, together with a deep knowledge of what an artist is; something very valuable to analyse them as humans beings, and not like the `divas’ others shows in many cases. The DVD is very respectable in showing us lot of trailers of this Nupen’s recordings, which I hope will be released in the next months or years.

The main documentary is shot in shadowy and white and begins in the very childhood of Jacqueline du Pre, from the time she was a child. We can view her pictures, her drawings, the first scores her mother unexcited to her with easy and magnificent tunes… Du Pre talks about how powerful considerable this period was for her loving the music and specially the cello. We continue passing through her early years as student, listening Pleeth to clarify how did he work with her, a girl defined by the English cellist as a gift of the nature, a talent that gave always a bit more in every step they gave together making music. The next years, when she knew Casals, Tortelier or Rostropovich are not very largely explained, but we have seek about them, like about her debut on the stage and on TV, as we can leer in this DVD together with her mother.

As this DVD wants to celebrate her career and her talent, Nupen don’t abuse of talking about her illness very grand, a multiple sclerosis that attacked her at 28. Anyway, some shots are shown from his last years, images not usually seen of the story and that shows her quiet in care for with the music, teaching the current cellists how to play, feel and understand the Cello Concerto, that one which is the main in her career. Watching her eyes, the scheme she regards the scores, the young man is breathtaking, as you can feel how grand adore is composed in her acquire and how noteworthy desire and longing of playing she has. On the other hand, Du Pre is presented like the very fighter woman she was, working for improve the knowledge and treatments of her illness; probably the last and tremendous concert and performing of her life. It’s shaded to survey this fraction, but as art is piece of life it embraces everything and her courage is colossal enough to be known even in this method.

The two performances we can gape and listen in this DVD are the Cello Concerto by Elgar and the Piano Trio “The Ghost”, by Beethoven, two amazing pieces of some of her most loved composers (we have to remember her long relation with the Elgar Concerto, I know at least 4 different recordings -Celibidache, Barenboim DVD & CD & Barbirolli- ; like her very well known playing of Beethoven Chamber Music with her husband Daniel Barnboim for EMI) .

The Elgar Concerto is her speciality, a ancient allotment she understood since she was quite a teenager, and which she gave unique life and sense in its melancholic and magical style, fleshy, of lyrics and desire of enjoining a life that is going. The performance is a bit more extinct of the other CD recordings that I know, specially in du Pre’s hands; she shows herself more introspective and technical, but, of course, never forgetting her very passion and romantic style which admires everybody. Barenboim conducting is very determined and right, and the view between them is a true chapter in the history of music. Excellent and outstanding version.

The Ghost Trio is a part described as one of the most impressive documents of music ever recorded and filmed. Based on the communication of the players, most of them by the looks and the eyes, and because of them instinctive playing, the film shows the most extraordinary performance of the work I know, even better than the recording they made for EMI. Romantic and perfect Beethoven.

The recordings are suitable for being from that time, specially Beethoven’s Trio, that has quite top-notch sound.

In sum, a DVD for not to be missed, a jewel for all the lovers of classical music and specially for those who treasure the cello and this outstanding and sadness brief artist that was Jacqueline du Pre, a miracle of communication and an intelligent example even decades after she died, at least in her human execute.

Opus has always been my current comics character and it was a dim, unlit day when Bloom County ended. When I first heard that this special would be on TV, I was very enraged. I was not disapointed.

One of the best things about this video is that it has two levels. Kids will like it because it has plenty of comical voices and, of course, Bill the Cat. But there is also a higher level that adults will appreciate with allusions to venerable shaded and white movies and references only they would come by.

The narrative is about Opus, a penguin, who asks Santa for a pair of wings that work. He tries everything from therapy to balloons in order to hover. The ending really shows the meaning of Christmas and is, in my belief, the best Christmas record (and should be shown on TV again) . This is a mountainous video that any kid would really appreciate and one that their parents will explore forward to as well.

I originally taped this special the one and only time it aired on TV. My VCR at the time was broken and recorded everything in dim in white, but I loved Opus N Bill so powerful I kept the tape for years. After looking for a actual tape of it everywhere with no success, I discovered Amazon shortly after the area came online and to my astonishment, Amazon had Opus N Bill listed. I bought it immediately! It was the first bewitch I ever made on Amazon and years later it is calm to this day, my common. I was thrilled to regain it on VHS befriend then. The only thing that would thrill me more would be if it was released on DVD today.

Hilary Duff stars in this movie as a girl whose father dies in an earthquake. Because there is no will left her stepmother gets everything, including Sam (Hilary) .

The movie picks up 8 years later where Sam is a senior in high school preparing to go to college at Princeton (that is, if she gets popular) . High school isn’t exactly a elated experience for Sam as she has only two friends. One proper, one an email friend that texts her constantly. To everyone else in the school she’s know as Diner Girl.

Home isn’t any better, as she is forced to live in the attic, do all of the chores, wait on her stepmother and sisters constantly, and work seven days a week at the diner owned by her stepmother.

Since I saw the previews of this movie I view it looked comic. I’ve been looking forward to it since the first preview. However, now that it’s out and I read the reviews I was nervous. Luckily my fears weren’t realized. This movie ended up being a sweet, family satisfactory, romantic comedy. Duff does an obliging job of portraying Sam. She truly is an respectable young actress, the pep rally scene is proof of this.

While this movie wasn’t really laugh out loud humorous, it was amusing at times, but more than that it was sweet and, for lack of a better word, cute. The direction was really nice. It wasn’t smart artsy, but it was well done and added a determined beauty to the film.

Cinderella Narrative ended up being a really sweet movie that deserves a better reaction than it recieved. Tall acting, a clever update of an former fairy account, an awesome soundtrack, and a likeable cast makes for a expansive afternoon at the movies.

Once upon a time not so very long ago a young girl named Sam Martin (Hilary Duff) lived in the San Fernando Valley with her widowed father (Whip Hubley) . He tickled in reading her fairy narrative stories every night, as well as teaching her wonderful values, including standing up for herself. He ran a successful diner and one day, married again to give Sam a mother: a woman named Fiona (Jennifer Coolidge) who had daughters of her absorb, fraternal twins Brianna (Madeline Zima) and Gabriella (Andrea Avery) . And then Sam? s father died in the Northridge earthquake, leaving her alone with her stepmother and two stepsisters. With no will found to insist of, Fiona takes over ownership of the house and the diner, relegating Sam to live in the attic.

Fast forward eight years: Sam has grown into a heavenly young senior in high school (who is often lost in the crowd), and must balance mounds of schoolwork, working at the diner, and taking care of her inferior stepmother? s every whim. While Sam dislikes being made into a? slave,? she tries to support her stepmother contented in order to regain money to back Princeton (her dream) . She has a text message secret admirer who she communicates with on a regular basis. Along with best friend Carter (Dan Byrd) they succor the school? s Halloween dance? incognito?, where Sam is region to meet her secret admirer for the first time. Dressed in a never-before-been-worn wedding gown and veil she was loaned by friends, including? fairy god-mother? Rhonda (played by Regina King, who has worked at the diner since Sam was a child), Sam is ready to meet her Prince Charming.

When Sam discovers that her secret admirer is non other than approved quarterback, Austin Ames (Chad Michael Murray), she is positive anything between them would never work out: after all, why would the most approved boy in school be involved in her? They play? 20? Questions (she gives him? 10? ) and Austin learns some things about her: fair when he is about to win her conceal and survey her moral identity, Sam? s cell rings and she runs away, leaving her cell phone late. Austin begins searching the school to explore his? Cinderella? s? identity; Austin, although jock-popular boy on the surface, longs to be a writer and befriend Princeton (his dad wants him to be a USC man like him) . But can he convince the elusive Sam that he likes her for herself? And when fellow seniors scrutinize who Austin? s? Cinderella? really is, things could regain grisly…

This is one of the cleanest films I have seen in ages! With really no language (no strong words were veteran, and no deity abuses that I caught) and minimal assure issues, this is definitely both family-friendly and young child respectable. A few things are very mildly implied: in one instance a young man goes off with a young woman and you are not distinct what they are up to (you soon fetch out they were? making out? nearby) . Other than that, the only objectionable elements approach from things like sisters fighting, a shrimp amount of cleavage, a son going against his father? s wishes, teenagers taunting each other, some still grievous humor, and a? execrable? stepmother who is egotistical and constantly concerned with her appearance.

The thing I liked best about this film was that it was cute and natty. It has fairy legend elements, but also tries to retract it from a realistic slant: of course, her secret admirer turning out to be the most common boy in school is a bit too fairy narrative, but clear scenes were pulled off in such a blueprint that I was nicely surprised. I? m not clear if I fill the screen Sam wears would really disguise her so considerable that Austin wouldn? t search for her: maybe if he was a completely self-centered jerk, but as we are to fill he is a nice guy, why wouldn? t he stare the girl he has gone to school with for at least all of high school?! Sam comes across as almost too unassuming and? whipped? by her stepmother at times, but I assume anyone can savor her patience and forbearance in dealing with her difficult? family.? Sam is really that girl-next-door you like to esteem.

A? tween? re-make and update of the classic Cinderella narrative, A Cinderella Narrative, while predictable and not entirely current, was luscious and a fun diversion from the everyday crush of Hollywood films. I especially appreciated (and contemplate you will too!) how desirable this film is: once in awhile Hollywood realizes that there are people out there who savor a storyline and film that have some obliging morals and leave out the muck: this is one they finally got true!
