My husband had been asking me to discover this movie with him for years – it was one of his favorites (from before we met), even though he continually called it a “chick flick”… I was hesitant to peer it because I had the concept that it would be a dim movie – and I honest don’t like movies that leave me blubbering & saddened for the rest of the day.

However, last weekend we finally sat down and watched it together, and I was pleasantly surprised! Although there was 1 or 2 parts that led me to bellow, it was not what I would categorize as a “shadowy” movie – in fact, when I really reflect about it, it was quite uplifting…

“Fried Green Tomatoes” weaves the life experiences of 3 very different women – 2 of them lived their youth about 50 or 60 years ago, and one is currently 40 something years passe.

The epic revolves around an “mature” woman who is sharing her & her friends life experiences with the younger, 40-something woman. This younger woman is quite miserable, feeling like a weakling who doesn’t really matter. She gains strength and a will to really LIVE through the stories shared with her. Spending time with the “obsolete woman” becomes an essential, life changing event for her – helping her to step-up and be the woman she truly wants to be.

This movie shows the importance of being willing to listen & learn from others – as well as the wealth of knowledge & experience that our elderly population has – if only we would steal the time to seize them in discussion & listen to what they have to offer.

Overall, I give this movie “2 thumbs up”! If you’re at all keen in human growth, and the “grand feeble days”, then this movie’s for you!

Every decade has its chick flicks that clarify those years and feature a who’s who of up-and-coming actresses mixed with veterans. In the 1980s, it was Steel Magnolias and in the 1990s it was Fried Green Tomatoes, a southern folktale based on the fresh by Fannie Flagg (who also co-wrote the screenplay) .

Fried Green Tomatoes is a graceful shot film that really evokes the rich, lush setting of the Deep South. Director Jon Avnet also uses warm colours to invent an spicy atmosphere that draws the audience in. There is precise artistic integrity to the camerawork which gives the film a Classic Hollywood vibe.

Fried Green Tomatoes is the perfect indolent Sunday summer afternoon movie that evokes simpler times. The film makes us devour taking the time out of our busy lives to finish and smell the roses as it were. The film espouses a simple yet notable message of tolerance and compassion towards one another but not in a preachy device. It is a message that is certainly applicable today (maybe even more so) making Fried Green Tomatoes even more relevant.

There are a collection of “Deleted Scenes” that are really honest limited bits of added footage tagged on at the destroy of or in-between scenes. There is nothing too memorable here.

Also included, is an comic collection of “Outtakes,” featuring flubs and blown lines.

“Moments of Discovery: The Making of Fried Green Tomatoes” is an bright, endearing retrospective documentary that runs fair over an hour. Ample news for fans is that Mary Stuart Masterson and Mary-Louise Parker contribute recent interviews and warmly assume filming anecdotes, including working in the intense Georgian heat, how Masterson really handled all those bees and Parker’s run-in with some infamous leeches. This is a must-watch for any fan of this movie.

“Sipsey’s Recipes” include true recipes for over 15 dishes that are taken from Flagg’s book and that allow you to recreate the Whistle End Café’s cuisine. This is a really nice touch.

“Jon Avnet’s Director’s Notes” includes script excerpts with specific directions he ancient as a guide when making the movie.

There are “Production Photographs” that include behind-the-scenes pics of the palatable food and also the movie crew at work.

“Poster Campaign” features various poster designs for the movie, including some really nice hand-drawn ones that are quite artistic in nature.

Finally, there is an audio commentary by director Jon Avnet. He takes us through his filmmaking process switching befriend and forth between talking about the themes of the film and production anecdotes.

Jean (Jean Gabin), a deserting soldier, emerges out the darkness as an approaching truck’s lights slice through the night. Hopeful, Jean arrives to Le Havre where he intends to pick up a recent beginning to his life, and where he can discard his past. A port city offers several opportunities for a person such as Jean to embark on modern journeys as the port is paunchy of ships leaving each day for recent destinations. Through the benefit of some strangers that Jean meets at a dilapidated down tavern he begins to fetch a light, which could back guide him befriend on track to a fresh life. However, the fog remains as Jean’s destiny has different plans for him as his superior nature seems to affect the people he meets.

Port of Shadows is a poetic visualization of a realistic myth, which Carne gave a magic touch to by using visual signs to enhance the cinematic experience. These signs have a symbolic value for the audience as it offers cerebral participation in the film, which can be pondered for some time. The symbolism of the fog and spend of a port city has a profound attain on the films cinematic value as it may causes some cognitive dissonance as both coexist and could be associated with opposite notions. An example of this symbolic antagonism for the fog and the port is the freedom of a port and the barrier of the fog. An analogy can be drawn the antagonism between the fog and the port to Jean’s ambiguous character who is splendid, yet ample of violence.

Port of Shadows is a worthy film based on a fresh by Pierre Mac Orlan that does not leave anyone untouched regardless of background or creed. The anecdote depicts elements of human ambiguity, crime, and care for, which is elevated with shining cinematography and direction. The cinematography uses several close-ups and zoom-outs in order to bring the characters feelings to the audience, which enhances the visual experience of the agreeable cast. After waiting for several years to glance this movie I am a limited disappointed, but I was expecting to be. I savor the books, those released in English, despite what I suspect to be problems with the translations. And I was very angry to hear about the movie and conception Viggo Mortenson would be ample as Captain Alatriste. And he is.

The fact that it was not released in North America on either movie screens or DVD prepared me for a less than perfect movie.

Visually, the movie looks noble. The actors and costumes are unbiased as I imagined the characters to be as are the settings and location decoration. However, the film makers tried to cram too remarkable into it leaving a disjointed mess. The Alatriste books are rather thin on site, but if one book does not a movie get, trying to film all of them does not work either. I am not involved in a slavish recreation of the books. But in trying to cram in so great, they have also left out too remarkable.

A movie based on the first two books would have been suffcient.

The Alatriste books are amazing, unbelievable historical recreations, brilliantly plotted and intricate mysteries. I had high hopes for this movie, which clearly had a great budget. Viggo Mortensen is perfectly cast as Alatriste. However, the filmmakers erred by trying to compress the entire series into one movie. It plays like an outline or summary. There is petite character development and less coherency. A considerable better near would have been to focus only on the first recent and make a faithful adaptation. Even if Mortensen (or funding) proved unavailable for sequels, that would have been a far more satisfying movie.

All this being said, the movie looks vast. I believed I was looking at early 17th century Spain (and Flanders) . I believed that the characters represented authentic types. As a fencer, I was less joyful with the fight scenes, which mostly seemed rushed and perfunctory and not convincingly choreographed.

Recommendation: Inspect it for the recreation of Spain as it began to decline from its peak of glory, and for Viggo Mortensen wearing one of the broad movie moustaches of all time. Unbiased don’t question greatness.

After five seasons of non-stop laughs and political incite, South Park began 2002 with a bang in its sixth season. This season was a season for experimenting with recent ideas that would assume the indicate in a whole modern direction. Child Abduction is Not Droll – But this episode positive is. Tweek is abducted and the parents order Lu Kim, owner of City Wok, to construct a city wall around South Park. With all the media reports of increased child abductions, the parents send their children off to live on their hold and they become Mongolians.

A Ladder to Heaven – Tweek appears to have been fired as the fourth friend. In this, quite possibly the best episode of the season, Stan, Kyle, and Cartman produce a ladder to heaven in an attempt to obtain their winning effect stub encourage from Kenny so that they can go on a candy shopping spree. Kyle is convinced that his deceased grandmother wants him to befriend Jewleeard and so Stan tries to present to the world that John Edward can’t talk to the monotonous and is nothing but a douche.

My Future Self n’ Me – Stan’s future self comes abet to the display and he’s a total slob. Stan then discovers that Butters also has a future self. After some sleuthing, they glean out it’s all a site by their parents to maintain them off of drugs and away from alcohol. With a minute succor from Cartman, they residence their revenge.

This is a ample alternative to many of the main stream talked about crime TV series out there. This packs in realism, comedy, action, adventure, mystery, and psuedo-science all into one note with a cast that couldn’t be more magnificent or delectable to explore week after week.

If you haven’t seen any of these impartial acquire season 1,2, & 3 you certainly won’t be disappointed and it’ll give you something to do while you wait for the DVD release of season 4. This movie was a steady surprise. I rented it on vacation when neither my son, my wife, nor myself could agree. I honest saw that Olympia Dukakis and Richard Benjamin were in it and he directed. And, it was a comedy.

But this film is the blackest of comedies. And the very scenes that were the most hilarious were also those that engendered outrage in me, gradually at first, and then with a rushing forward.

It is the fair epic of the latter stages of development of the Bradley armoured vehicle which was featured in the Gulf War, and the Air Force officer, James Burton, whose task, by Congressional edict, was to notice off on the final testing of the vehicle. Without his approval the Bradley could not go into production.

What he discovered was that the Bradley’s make had evolved from a lickety-split troop transport to a mish-mash of everything, making it execrable for each of its now numerous and contradictory roles.

The general and leader of the project is Kelsey Grammar. The questioning Congressional chairperson is Olympia Dukakis, and Richard Benjamin is Caspar Weinberger, Reagan’s secretary of defense. He’s always finding out the unpleasant news from the morning’s Washington Post since all his military people are fair blandly reassuring him that it’s all proceeding grandly: not a single glitch in the project.

The light tone and jaunty whisk retain the film enchanting along. The villains not quite verge on buffoonery. Grammer is obviously completely disdainful of the Congress people and their questioning, yet reining it in so he can (almost) appear to acquire them seriously, so they’ll go away.

I would have prefered it if Grammer had been more restrained and a bit more subtle about it. The generals we notice at hearings on TV are worthy more straight-faced. But perhaps it wouldn’t have been possible to retain the tone of the film nor to reveal their disdain nor to fabricate plausible the supposedly moral incidents, each novel one more ludicrous and implausible than the one before.

As the film ended I was very upset. I’m not at all hawkish in my politics. But I do absorb that when we commit Americans to fight that they should have equipment that serves them the best. I was laughing as the film proceeded as one sinister and hilarous incident succeeded another. I did want to know whether the “Office of Ruminant Procurement” really did near into existence or was it Hollywood taking liberties with the text.

As with Colonel Burton, though, the knowledge that US brass would push enthusiastically for a death trap vehicle is a bit remarkable for me.

This film would be hilarious were it not so unpleasant.

This film is not portrayed as a documentary Detached, it purports to judge in a semi-accurate manner the convulsions that attended the development of the Bradley fighting vehicle. Based on news reports, it contains more than a bit of truth, even if there is some dramatic license being employed.

The development of the Bradley had a long history before it ever reached deployment. It was plagued by cost overruns, changing specifications and failed tests. It even went through a phase where it was supposed to be aquatic. In the slay, a troop carrier for 11 troops became a scout vehicle that was too prominent to do scout work, had a turret like a tank so it would attract extra fire, had aluminum armor so it would not be too heavy (or finish shells) and would only carry 6 people. The reasons for all of these travesties can be found in pork barrel politics.

This is a comedy and it is comic in its irony. That does not finish it from also being a tragedy.

The Princess Blade is a decent film, and packs a splendid punch into the original Samurai style film genre.

The film centers around a young woman, Yuki, who starts off as an assasin for the House of Takemikazuchi.(a clan of X royal guards turned assasins for money) She turns on her house however, when she discovers that her mother was killed by the House years earlier. Yuki’s mother had been a royal figure in a disbanded kingdom, which leaves Yuki as the only remaining aire and the title of Princess. (Thus the reason for the flims name) Yuki soon finds herself hunted by her broken-down comrades, and she must battle them to keep herself, as well as salvage revenge for her mother.

At one point Yuki is wounded in one of the skimishes, and is befriended by Takashi, a young man who is in an insurrectional movement to overthrow the goverment that funds the Takemikazuchi. Takashi shares Yuki’s worry of having a tragic history, which is revealed during the film. He also has a sister who is in a post tramatic status which causes her to be level-headed somewhat from reality. Yuki hides out with the two for awhile and begins to scrutinize that she can again fetch happiness in her life. Eventually however, she is tracked down by the Takemikazuchi, and must fight them in one final showdown.

The Princess blade was a apt film both in narrative and in character development. The sword fights are well choregraphed, and the actors performances bring a agreeable distress for the characters in the anecdote. Also, there are a lot of similarities to Extinguish Bill, which was based in allotment on fresh Japanese Smaurai style cinema.

The film does have a tragic ending however, and leads me to bear that a sequal was in mind when this film was made.(it may not be the ending the viewer is rooting for) Also, like in many Japanese films, the stroy slows down quite a bit during the middle, which left me begging for a few more sword fights. That being the main reason for a 4 instead of a 5 star rating. The film is not as action packed as Versuses, but it’s less gorey, and takes itself distinguished more seriously.

The tech aspects include both a Japanese and English dubbed language track,(ADV does a nice job on the dub) trailers of other films and that’s about it.

Overall I enjoyed THe Princess Blade, and would study it again. But I doubt it’s a movie that I would want to witness frequently. My advice is that renting it will suffice for most people, but hard core fans of Japanese cinema and unusual Samurai style films might believe purchasing it. It does have it’s moments.

This review is more to represent the quality of this DVD from Amazon.com, than it is of the film content–although, I reflect some reviewers here have been scheme too harsh on this film (mountainous bushido action and SFX, fine yarn) .

I purchased “The Princess Blade” on ebay and saved a few bucks. What I got was a DVD with no menus in English and absoulutely HORRENDOUS sub-titles. It’s like they chose to translate every 10th Japanese sentence and even then, only into English sentence fragments. Despite this, I liked the film enough to order it from Amazon.com.

The fresh copy (from Amazon) has menus in English, an English soundtrack and subtitles so satisfactory you can follow the record and even follow nuances of the epic.

This fabulous documentary, produced by the team who gave us “The Hamster Factor and Other Tales of the Twelve Monkeys”, covers six weeks of pre-production of this ambitious and already paralyzed work and the six days of precise production which destroyed it.

With an odd, almost melancholy closeness to Gilliam’s project, we gather a contemplate at other attempts to film the account (Orson Welles entertained the thought for nearly twenty years, achieving mere minutes of test footage) ; in-depth looks at storyboards with dialogue; cloak tests of “giant” performers (as Terry quips “This is our trailer!” with his trademark Amadeus giggle) ; meticulous detail being applied to explain props and sets; auditions for character actors, and prep work with the film’s would-be stars Jean Rochefort and Johnny Depp, and the overall excitement of launching a project of memoir (though underfunded) vision …..

Then the cameras roll. The crew are forced to film in an station adjacent to a military testing range, and the actors can barely hear their director or fill spoken lines over the roaring jets. Misunderstandings between members of the multi-national crew result in a lack of preparedness on a ridiculously tight shooting schedule. A sudden storm literally washes necessary filming equipment down a muddy gully, and transforms the locale to one totally different from the one filming was begun in. Star Rochefort suffers multiple herniated discs, causing excruciating harm while on horseback, and has to leave the production for an indefinite time. A well-rehearsed horse becomes nervous in the presence of visiting financiers to the station, and can’t produce.

Like his hero Sam Lowry from “Brazil”, the realization may indeed be one of hopelessness, but the dream never really dies. Terry Gilliam’s “un-making of” relate makes for a viewing experience that is simultaneously agonizing and piquant, a must for filmmaking hopefuls who want to be truly prepared for what can happen.

Poor Terry Gilliam. He spends time, money, energy, and I’m certain eaten a lot of antacids, and it comes to naught. But I guess the worse allotment is not being able to fulfill his dream. For the uber-creative director of many beneficial films, including personal fave “Twelve Monkeys”, you’d mediate he’d be able to whip up a nice dinky Don Quixote film. But without Hollywood’s resources, the money, punctuality from the actors, and cooperation from the weather his film, and his dream, came crashing down. It’s miserable, because it looked really, really obedient.

Unlike the glossy “making of” features on many films that are standard DVD extras these days, this documentary goes underneath the smiles and compliments and “best time of my life” statements and makes you wonder how films even rep made. Although Gilliam’s “Quixote” had more than it’s shapely portion of problems to deal with, this documentary shows very well the perpetual purgatory of terror that can befall a production.

From the very beginning we perceive Gilliam struggling with props and sets, and his exhausted and frustrated crew wondering what exactly he wants while struggling to come by resources that aren’t as abundant in Spain as they are in London or Hollywood. We examine Gilliam’s suitable hand man, 1st Assistant Director Phil Patterson, and various producers trying to reel in actors, Johnny Depp, Vanessa Paradis, and Jean Rochefort, from all over Europe on schedule (while making the said schedule) . Once shooting, a hail storm from nowhere strikes, fighter planes do test runs over the area, a studio is actually a warehouse with horrendous sound, Rochefort comes down with a prostate spot, and calamity after calamity hits the weary production. It’s painful, and by the time Patterson informs Gilliam that his film is basically lifeless, it’s the emotional, inevitable climax of a very taut and stress-packed legend. It never was going to happen from the beginning, and we inspect almost every itsy-bitsy of it. The filmmakers of this film don’t interfere with what’s going on, and most of the input we fetch is a more pleasant (and very visual) design of eavesdropping, with the exception of a few brilliant glances here and there and short explanations from producers, Gilliam, and crew members. And Johnny Depp shows up totally at ease and laid aid (with sympathetic shocked glances and tension breaking wisecracks when needed), to the delight of this Depp fan.

I mediate this is one of the best films about the making of a film, a subject we really don’t accept to hear mighty about although it’s remarkably lively. It’s up there with DVD commentaries and the similarly apocalyptic “Project Greenlight” series in it’s dive into the actual machinery of a film. Where “Project Greenlight” gave us an belief of what a line producers do, unhurried the scenes relationships, and budgetary fidgeting, this gives you a helpful conception the enormity of the movie plot and everything that could possibly go irascible. According to these, it’s more akin to managing a company or running an army and trying to rep every battle than creating the vision of a renegade artist.

it focuses more on the international Brig & the Republican side. i enjoyed it & also there is a trivia test which i wish all info DVDs had.

There is no political or strategic explanation for the war or events leading to it. Most annoying, the speaker is reading poetry instead of giving an honest story of such events. Apparently, the ideological nature of the war, which drew “intellectuals” and volunteers from many countries, is emphasized by this poetical bias. I want fair facts. I did no engage a literary work. I could not choose it after 10 minutes, and I did not recognize anymore.

After all the hype and comparisons to ‘Steel Magnolias’, ‘Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood’, sadly, did not do considerable box office, which was a shame, as it is a more intimate, realistic vision of women and life-long friendships than the glossier ‘Magnolias’.

Four girl friends in Louisiana earn a secret sisterhood in 1937, swearing eternal devotion to each other, and they remain best friends through all the triumphs and tragedies in their lives. When the daughter of one of them (Sandra Bullock), a successful playright, has an interview with Time magazine in which she blasts her mother’s impact on her life, the mother (Ellen Burstyn, who is proper!) goes ballistic, cutting the daughter out of her life, totally. Into this maelstrom charges the other members of the Sisterhood, kidnapping Bullock, and attempting to produce things proper!

The film then jumps succor and forth in time, with Ashley Judd (who gives an Oscar-worthy performance) playing the younger Burstyn. She has a lot of tickled adventures with her Ya-Ya sisters, but also has to deal with racism, a jealous religious zealot of a mother, an overly loving father (David Rasche, breaking free of his usual humorous roles), a accurate worship who dies in WWII, and a family with a guy she ’settles’ for (played, in explain day, by the extraordinary James Garner) . There is also a unlit secret that is the core of the mother/daughter alienation, which must be dealt with in order for the rift between Bullock and Burstyn to heal (No, I will NOT give it away!)

If you do the math about the years covered, you realize the present-day tale SHOULD be taking plot in the early nineties, at the latest, but this doesn’t injure the overall effectiveness of the describe. As the other present-day sisters, Fionnula Flanagan, Shirley Knight, and (especially) Maggie Smith are Fabulous, as is Angus MacFadyen, as Bullock’s sympathetic and likable fiance.

While this is unabashedly a ‘chick flick’, something I really liked was that they DIDN’T plunge help on that customary chestnut of somebody dying to attend as a convenient catalyst for change and the healing process. And the dialog is rotund of wickedly hilarious one-liners about men, alcohol, friendship, and growing weak!

I was fortunate enough to perceive this movie at an early premiere. From the moment the movie began it was legal to the unbelievable spirit, integrity and vitality of the modern. There are some changes of course, (using a plane instead of an elephant for Lawanda), but not only does it work, this is by far the best book to movie adaptation I’ve ever seen. I’ve always been bitterly disappointed by the movie version of great books, but “Divine Secrets” has broken that mold. There is never a tiring, moment, lifeless script or moment that doesn’t shine. My only criticism was the rather dispassionate procedure Sidda (Sandra Bullock) responded to Vivi (Ellen Burnstyn) at the very extinguish of the movie. But whether you’re a ya-ya or simply looking for a phenomenal chronicle to sit down to, this movie is so layered with intensity you’d have to be unimaginative to miss it. Don’t let the impress “chick flick” mislead you, it’s mighty more than that. Ashley Judd has never made a movie before this as far as I’m concerned, but it was the actresses that played the older ya-ya’s that completely stole the note! I’m counting the days till the DVD release! YA-YA!
